Pendants Go Big
Necklaces have been getting a lot of love lately and oversized pendants, in particular, are suddenly showing up everywhere. Whether they’re keys, hearts, flowers, or pave encrusted charms, when it comes to pendants, bigger is better.

Although the hefty pendant used to be seen only in artisan brands, the look has gone decidedly mainstream. Jorge Revilla recently unveiled a line of silver organic-shaped pendants as part of its Desires collection. Marco Bicego upped the ante with its Goa collection, which utilizes sizable circular pendants in gold and diamonds. Ivanka Trump Fine Jewelry has taken the trend to the feminine side by offering giant tassels in diamond briolettes and seed pearls. With its Dreaming in Color collection, Michael M. has created large, lavish pieces in natural color and white diamonds. Likewise, Rahaminov Diamonds’ Kifani collection showcases large polished rough diamonds.

Known for its extremely versatile pieces, Mattioli has unveiled a new line of large openwork pendants that capitalize on this trend, as well. The oversized Syriana collection can be personalized through variations of gold, colored stones, diamonds, and silk—in oval, round, or heart shapes—as well as interchangeable mother of pearl discs in orange, purple, or white. The group and its stylized floral motifs is intended to evoke the atmosphere of a harem. “Just as the barred windows of the harem conceal the beauty of the women inside, so does the lacy gold conceal the underlying stone, revealing only glimpses of its colour,” says the Italian jewelry maker.

Celebrities have jumped at the oversized pendant trend. At the Golden Globes, Julia Roberts wowed the crowd with a stunning Van Cleef & Arpels necklace that boasted a pendant of 29 citrines and diamonds set in 18K gold. Rihanna rocked the Kids’ Choice Awards with an enormous diamond cross, while pop princess Miley Cyrus sported a huge crystal pendant. At the Screen Actors Guild awards, Kate Hudson turned the trend around by wearing a Cartier sautoir, with the massive diamond pendant hanging down her back.

These statement-making pieces work best with beaded chains or on multiple strands. The look pairs well with a simple wardrobe, which allows pendants to shine in their own right. Regardless of how they’re worn, though, these attention-grabbing centerpieces show no signs of shrinking any time soon.
