Gold at the Globes
Jewelry at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards
January 16, 2012
In 2012, fashion imitated red-carpet life at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Hollywood. Just as competing financial issues have dominated the world stage, the red carpet was similarly splintered into two realities: austerity and conservation. The over-the-top trains, Cinderella frills, and plunging necklines shared the spotlight alongside subdued simplicity.
Social-centric starlets wore sleek, form-fitting gowns with downplayed accents and beading. Likewise, their jewelry leaned toward accoutrement and accessory, rather than as focal point and cause célèbre.
Cate Blanchett (Hanna) and Piper Perabo (The Prestige) were among the many celebrities choosing taupe, nude, and light pink shades for their Globes gowns. Their whispered and muted tones were a noticeable departure from the typically rushing crimsons, lush greens, and aristocratic blues typically seen on the red carpet.
Heidi Klum (Project Runway) wore a slim Calvin Klein Collection bisque silk crepe sheath dress with a dramatic plunging back and cast an elegant silhouette. A decorative bib necklace of turquoise and diamonds, provided by Lorraine Schwartz, adorned Klum's neckline and slender fingers as the perfectly color-rich crowning touch.
Charlize Theron (Young Adult) kept to the classics and wore a vibrant headband featuring platinum with old-cut and rose-cut diamonds from the 1920’s by Cartier—on loan from a Geneva museum—with her Dior couture gown, exhibiting a sweet but sophisticated air.
Michelle Williams (My Week With Marilyn), who went home with the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, adorned her pixie cut with a jeweled, black, vintage Fred Leighton headband to accent her midnight blue Jason Wu gown.
Calling from the deep blue depths, celebrity dignitaries Julianne Moore (Crazy, Stupid, Love) and Reese Witherspoon (Water for Elephants) shimmered in form-fitting, mermaid-train, silhouette gowns. Moore dazzled in a deep black Chanel gown set ablaze by Fred Leighton emerald tassel earrings. Also donning Leighton jewels, Reese Witherspoon's curve-hugging Zac Posen gown began as a bodice and fell, in dramatic curls, to the red carpet.
Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife) stunned in a backless, shimmering, violet Naeem Khan gown and dramatic jade and diamond Lorraine Schwartz double-drop earrings.
Also swimming across the red carpet, Sophia Vergara (Modern Family) rode a wave of deep blue with a stunning Vera Wang gown, topped off by Harry Winston “whitecaps”: a pair of show-stopping chandelier earrings and a formidable latticed bangle.
Angelina Jolie (The Tourist) was brilliant, as always, in an asymmetrical Atelier Versace gown, with a satin sunburst at the waist and a striking crimson neckline. Jolie's visage and ensemble were completed by classic platinum and diamond Lorraine Schwartz stud earrings and ring.
Kate Beckinsale's (Underworld: Awakening) daring Roberto Cavalli gown hovered below her slender neckline and hugged the young actress' curves before flaring delicately. Stacked diamond bracelets and long, luxurious loose triangle diamond earrings by Lorraine Schwartz playfully framed Beckinsale's show stealing look.
