Watch Trends: Unexpected Materials
Whether they’re ornamental like Fendi’s fur, or they bring a technical aspect to watches (notably increased resistance to the most extreme conditions), unexpected materials were popping up all over Baselworld. Such is the case of the tungsten on the Galactic Unitime SleekT by Breitling, the magnesium on the Diagono Magnesium by Bvlgari and the stainless steel on the I.N.O.X. Red by Victorinox Swiss Army.

Colorful, joyful and above all incredibly glamorous, the Fendi My Way collection comes in four new 50-piece limited editions. The watch flaunts its ultra-feminine curves, accentuated by a cambered diamond-set case and a removable Arctic fox fur collar called Glamy. Today’s sophisticated woman can choose to wear the watch in tune with her mood, fur-free for daytime or complete with the Glamy in the evening. Wildly chic and imbued with the expertise of the Fendi fur ateliers, these four limited series are fitted with an Elaphe snakeskin strap in a color to match the Glamy. The small-size version of the watch is studded with 421 diamonds (approximately 1.87 carats), while the larger variation sparkles with 667 diamonds (approximately 3.06 carats).

  • Movement: quartz
  • Functions: hours, minutes
  • Case: steel entirely pavé-set with diamonds, 28 mm or 36 mm, Glamy in silvery blue, green, orange or yellow, sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating, water-resistant to 50 meters (5 bar/165 feet)

  • Strap: blue, green, orange or yellow Elaphe snakeskin, steel pin buckle

Breitling introduces a double revolution with its new Galactic Unitime SleekT. First, its new, in-house world-time B35 calibre boasts standout user-friendliness. Simply pulling out the crown and turning it one way or the other in one-hour increments enables the user to correct all the dial indications in one smooth move, complete with automatic adjustment of the date to local time, in both directions. To ensure this unprecedented functionality, Breitling has developed two patented innovations concerning the differential system and the liaison between the city disk and the movement. Two other patents relating to the winding and time-setting mechanisms protect the latter. The second revolution is of an aesthetic nature, with a brand-new bezel in tungsten carbide, an ultra-resistant high-tech material featuring a color that strikes a subtle contrast with the polished steel.

  • Movement: mechanical automatic, Manufacture Breitling calibre B35, COSC-certified chronometer, 28,800 vib/h, 56 jewels, more than 70-hour power reserve
  • Functions: hours, minutes, seconds, world time, date
  • Case: steel, 44 mm, tungsten carbide bezel, cambered sapphire crystal, glare-proof on both sides, water-resistant to 100 meters (10 bar/330 feet)
  • Dial: Antarctica white or Trophy black
  • Bracelet: Pilot

Ever well ahead of its time, Bvlgari combines cutting-edge materials in its pioneering urban timepiece: Diagono Magnesium. Its remarkably light and impressively sturdy case middle is made from two materials notably used in the space industry: magnesium and PEEK, a polymer capable of withstanding the most extreme conditions. The bezel engraved with the double Bvlgari logo is made of ceramic, while the dial features a “Motorlac” coating, as does the surface of the case middle. This lacquer developed by Bvlgari serves twin protective and decorative roles: It’s not only capable of withstanding extreme temperatures or variations in the dilatation of materials, but also enables daringly colorful and grainy-textured effects. The Diagono Magnesium comes in a choice of four colors: anthracite, chestnut brown, silver-toned and blue.

  • Movement: mechanical automatic, 28,800 vib/h, 42-hour power reserve
  • Functions: hours, minutes, seconds, date
  • Case: steel, 41 mm, case middle in magnesium and PEEK, surface coated with anthracite, chestnut brown, silver-toned or blue Motorlac, ceramic bezel engraved with the double Bvlgari logo, black PVD-coated back
  • Dial: surface coated with anthracite, chestnut brown, silver-toned or blue Motorlac to match the case middle
  • Strap: vulcanized rubber with PEEK pin buckle

Launched to mark Victorinox’s 130th anniversary, the I.N.O.X.
